Open Question: As well as encouraging more women to study science, should we encourage more men to study arts?

A few questions have been posted today about whether women are as competent or able to perform in sciences as men, and whether more should study science. What about the flip side? Social sciences, psychology, sociology, nursing, teaching underpin the fabric of our society. They determine how we care for the risk, how the next generation are raised, how we understand human interaction and how society functions. Yet teaching and nursing are mostly female professions, and the others are moving towards being being female professions. Should we be encouraging more men to study them? Why or why not? care for the risk=care for the sick.

Open Question: Millenials: the "Lost Generation"?

I am a Millennial myself (1992) and was repeatedly told that there was no wish for my generation. At first I rejected it and thought I could change it. Now, however, every day I'm beginning to believe it more. First, how has my generation become "lost?" Well, for one, a majority of us are lazy. Take for example, this forum. The Polls and Surveys section is overflowing with questions and answers, and so is the Homework "Help" section with kids hoping to receive some idiots to do their assignments for them. However the Arts and Literature, Performing Arts, and Science and Mathematics sections are generally only patronized by older individuals. The way that my generation has slipped on the Gen X and the Baby Boomer's banana peels shows in the way we view our friends, colleagues, and even strangers. Bullying is at an every-time high in schools, and there seems to be no etiquette standards among my peers for how to behave. I'm guilty too- I do admit that I've been gradually reading less and wasting time on this computer more and more. This shows how our generation differs from its predecessors. I been constantly reminding myself that there is a "brain drain" going on in our society. I dread the day where books are tossed aside in favor of spending time on television. You might think its odd that I think that, but it's the icy difficult reality of today. Can a scene akin to Bradbury's Fahrenhiet 451 be in store for us? Now, I'm every for changing the status quo between the generations, but has it gone too far? We've managed to eradicate the closed-mindedness of past generations for the most part, but the downside to that is that common sense and courtesy has seemingly gone down with the boat, too. For example, it is considered experimentative go to school in your pajamas lately. As I said before, I have nothing against change, but there's a line to be drawn. So, then, do you think that there is wish for our generation? Can we keep ourselves from our possess futures?

Open Question: What does it take to get into Juilliard......? [i'm a freshman in high school]?

Music/Acting comes as a natural talent for me. I can sing, play piano etc. I've always wanted to become a journalist or a newscaster but ever since I joined my high school choir.. the choir itself opened my eyes to a whole new world basically. I've never felt so strongly about something in my entire life. The performing arts program at my school is pretty much why I adore school so much in general, and because of that, my grades are out of this world and I've become my possess person. That's how much I adore music and my passion for it grows and grows each day. It's where I finally feel comfortable with who I am and I KNOW that this is for me. I''m not 'einstein' when it comes to Music and Theatre, but I want to be able to receive at that level. Am i starting to tardy to actually consider going to juilliard? What are the requirements?

Open Question: MUSIC EDUCATION - TRANSFERRING SCHOOLS?

I am a freshman flute player majoring in music education. I'm beginning to think I may fit in better at another college--however, I still haven't found one. If I really think I might be transferring, would I be better off staying at the college I'm at now for another semester or two (which would be quite a bit of money) and searching for schools, but continuing my education until I find the right school, or dropping out and focusing every of my energy (not spent practicing that is) on finding the right school? Would dropping out at the end of this semester look bad at the schools I apply to next? I'm thinking about looking into performing arts focused schools, as opposed to liberal arts schools

Resolved Question: Is it wrong to want to go and pursue my dream, even if it means leaving behind everyone I love?

I don’t know what to do, I have just been accepted for a performing arts scholarship in 2009 and I really want to go. It’s a boarding school so I will have to leave every my friends and family. Im ok with doing that because the arts are my passion, but I think my mum and dad are going to miss me a lot. Ever since I was 5 years old I knew I wanted to be in the business of the arts. When I found out I was so glad! I even started crying, and so did my mum but I don’t believe for the same reasons, they have been dropping hints that they don’t want me leaving them. Is it wrong to want to go and pursue my dream, even if it means leaving behind everyone I adore? Am I a bad person? Should I give up and just stay? I am at a level 5 trinity exam standard, level 4 ameb piano standard, im currently studying level 5 trombone trinity and 4 singing ameb, I am also doing level 7 jazz and level 5 tap as we as reaching intermediate foundation ballet, I train at level 4-5 gymnastic. I have been involved in 8 musicals, which two I had a major part in and many more plays. I have been competing for music and drama for 11 years now, Last year wining a 3rd in championship sinning and this year wining 2nd in sinning and 3rd in the wood wind and brass championship. As well as getting the senior aggregate in speech and drama this year. Is i so wrong to want to go? can someone tell me?

If you go to LIPA or are planning to go to do Music (Performing Arts), I need your help! What did you do for your demo CD? I'm going for singing, so I thought I'd do 'How Far' by Martina McBride because it'd show that I can sing high and strong (go hear if you don't know what I mean). I write songs too, so I thought if I did my possess tune so they could look what my style is. But I can't record any of my instruments onto the computer, (I haven't got an amp! And no guide for my keyboard) so would they accept if I made it up on Finale Notepad or if I sang it to a karaoke track of another tune? If you're in for singing, what did you put on your CD? Open Question: Wishing you had a different talent - Is it possible to acheive what your not good at naturally?

I was asked this question recently by a pal of mine who really loves music and wants to sing, but she feels that she's not talented enough to use it as a professional career, at least. The thing is that she is very good at drawing and art, but she finds no personal enjoyment in it - to her, it is no different than being able to read. I feel bad for her - because of her adore of music and wanting to sing, she is very knowledgable about music and she actually does have a sensitive ear for it - but she just can't perform as well as others. Is it possible to become better at singing even if your not good at it- naturally?

Open Question: (GIRLS)Let me put forward a scenario, what are your first impressions?

So you look two guys, they are complete strangers to you: The first one is arm-wrestling with a bunch of his mates and beating them every, he's mostly outgoing and can be cocky when things go his way. Likes to joke around. He is also an exceptional guitarist and has performed brilliantly in front of live audiences. His brain is logical, and prefers mathematics over creative arts. Is always surrounded by many people. The second guy is sitting nearby reading a book, he isn't interested participating in the arm-wrestling even though he could easily beat the first guy. He isn't shy, but he doesn't talk much either, but when he does talk, he makes sure that it's something that spawns a long-running conversation. Has a subjective mind and often trusts his emotions over his logic. He greatly values privacy. It is generally agreed that the second guy is better looking than the first, but is much less social in personality. On both of these guys, separately: - Rate your curiosity (out of 10) - Similar to yourself other people you know? (YES/NO) - Whether you would talk to them? (YES/NO) - Anything else you would like to add Btw, you only need answer on one sorry, forgot to add that lol but, by every means, answer on both if you want

Open Question: Helpp! Neeed good closing sentence(s)! ?

Surrounded by the citizens of earth and examining them conservatively, I discovered the true meaning of these “human beings.” These humans aren’t just typical everyday superheroes. Human beings have a lot of meaning to themselves, but why is it that they strive to gain knowledge every week, at every second? After watching these humans I have discovered why! They want the understanding of learning something new on a daily basis. After staying on this extraordinary planet for 13 years, I also plan to learn new things on a daily basis! Being here everyday has inspired me to study further and maintain that goal until I collapse on my knees pleading for mercy! There’s a big question mark in my head though, what am I going to learn? I have a gazillion ideas contained inside my petite mind, but not anything as to essentially learn them. However, if I HAD to make an option of three things I desire to become skilled at it’d be: cooking, performing arts, and to grin even when the worst series of events has happened. On the other hand, while evaluating these things I devise to be trained at I ought to approach with a reason why! I have the desire to cook, because in the upcoming future I’d like to cook for my beloved one everyday or at least try to keep myself from eating ramen noodles day after day. I already am very familiar with acting, but to develop myself as a serious actor I need to learn how to carry out every sorts of different responsibilities. I’d also like to be a very optimistic person and put together a big grin for people when they’re down! I’ll do the most idiotic thing even if it includes acting like absolute idiot! However, I just discovered a very out of the ordinary feeling. This feeling can’t really be explained in words, but more like actions. This emotion is called “adore.” The word itself has thousands of meanings, but who has actually found the true meaning to its name? In my perspective the meaning of this word “adore” is, to care a lot about a certain person or people in your life and would do anything for just one grin on their face for the relax of their life. Example: “I would die for this child, just so he won’t have an ounce of sadness” – Sonny Koufax from “Big Daddy”

Open Question: I'm applying for a Performing Arts/Art school but am not talented in the arts?

The school is really good academically but is mostly known for it's Arts. It's one of the best art schools in the country and I'm afraid that if I go I'll be nice of out of place and I might not even receive in because of my lack of talent in the Arts. I do draw, paint, etc. and I do play the piano and I have an interest in acting but I have no experience in it. I'm not sure what the requirements are to accept me to the school but my whole family has high expectations of me getting into this school. Is there anybody in my position? But I might want to pursue acting, it's not like I hate the Arts. I don't think an audition is required because it is a academically renown as well.

Open Question: What do you think of this paper, from 1-10? Critic needed!!?

Learning about a new culture does not have to involve taking notes out of books, and then memorizing information. That nice of learning is really old-schooled and boring. A contribution my class and I made to the arts were in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Throughout those years, my class was studying worldwide cultures though interaction and the arts. We did things like put on plays, performances, paint, and interact online with people who lived in those areas of the world. The first subject was China. During our study of China, we did a ribbon dancing act and a few Chinese paintings. We painted pictures of the outside world. The scene always included things like rainbows, birds, bamboo, water, and tiny buildings, such as lighthouses, out in the distance. During the ribbon dancing act, my class and I were given red and blue ribbons. The boys got the red and the girls got the blue. Red represented flame and blue represented water. The things that I liked most about the ribbon dancing was waving the ribbons around and listening to the music. The music sounded so real that I really felt like I was out there dancing, in China. Ms. Yuen was our director. My school and I even visited her studio, which was also her home, in midtown Manhattan. The second play my class and I put on was in the 4th grade. In 4th grade, my class and I put on a Swan Lake play, in our cafeteria because my school did not have an auditorium at the time. In the Swam Lake play, I was one of the ducks. The play turned out to be so great that everyone felt like the scene was actually occurring. Everyone really looked like their role, especially my pal Jennifer, as the Queen, Alex, as the hunter, who killed the ducks, and Ricardo, as the king. The music really fit each scene. The purpose of this play was to perform the study of this Mexican muralist named Diego Rivera. Diego Rivera was a muralist who loved to paint, and always dreamed of his art coming to life. Diego must have painted a mural from Swan Lake. This play was an expression of how he saw it of coming to life. The final study my class and I put on was a study of Australia. We used this website called Think.com to interact with people who lived there. After we gathered enough info, my class and I split up into smaller groups, to study different area's of the country. My group contained 3 people. Those people were Ashley Thomas, Diana Mizquri, Jennifer Garcia and I. Our theme was shopping. Our scene took place in a shopping mall, in Sydney, Australia. There wasn't really a conflict, just a typical day shopping. The most interesting scene I remember was the scene where the main characters and I met someone unexpected in the shoe store. She was the mom of one of the main characters. In the shoe store, she was the cashier. Ashley, Diana, and I played the main characters. Jennifer played the unexpected girl. In conclusion, these were my 3 main experiences of the arts. How have you shown your talent of art in life? As my class and I put on more plays, I felt more confident in myself, compared to when we just began. When we just began, I felt very nervous. Though acting can be a real nerve-wracking experience, it also has a lot of fun after it, and you feel more confident afterwards. These experiences were much better, compared to if I had to take notes on these subjects out of a textbook and memorize information. My thesis was: Learning about a new culture does not have to involve boring textbook work, and then memorizing information. This paper is going to Beacon High School, NYC. I wish my interview is next week, but before I hand my paper in, I need criticism.

Open Question: What do you think of this paper, on a scale of 1-10? How can I improve it?

Voting Question: How to deal with a 27 year old friend from a 19 perspective?

Ok so I've been talking to this guy for the past couple of months and we have become really close to one another. We have a lot in common and able to have long conversations on performing arts, music, relationships and respect each other and opinions we might have. So the other night was our first time asking each other our ages...which never really of interest considering the deep conversations that we've had until now. There is nice of a huge age difference, I'm 19 and he's 27. I mean it's nice of bothersome because he's so much older. I've never really had an interest in older guys who were more than 3-5 years older than me. But for some reason I just like talking to him and nice of worried that people will mistake the "relationship" that we have and blow it out of proportion. So what should I do? No I didn't meet him on line or anything for that matter. I met him through my oldest sister who is 25.

Resolved Question: What should I wear to see a ballet?

So I've been invited to go to look the Nutcracker ballet with my pal's family for her birthday and we're going to dress up a bit, what do you think I should wear? It's not the most formal ballet (as in we're not talking New York ballet or anything), just one at a performing arts middle in town. I'm 15, around 5'5'', with brown hair, blue-green eyes and glasses.

Voting Question: Cal state question. Does this matter?

I am applying to some cal state schools (northridge, long beach, channel islands, dominguez hills, maybe l.a.), but I never took any visual/performing arts classes. However I have 14 semesters of foreign languages, which is well over the requirement lol. So will that make up for the fact that I never took an art class. Cuz I was never told that it would be a problem...I was always encouraged when I said i wanted to take extra languages. I always thought that foreign languages could replace art. Will the campuses care? Or am I screwed because I never took ceramics or some other pointless thing like that... Well I got a 4 on the Spanish AP test....I guess that's good??
